Over the years, we have seen many things come and go but as you will discover in this overview of the software industry, this is one industry that continues to thrive.  For this reason, there are a growing number of people interested in securing a solid but also lucrative career in the software field.  As you will see in this overview of the software industry, there are so many exciting evolutions and creations, making this one of the most fascinating and exciting arenas in today’s world. First in our overview of the software industry is that this particular venture first began in the mid-1970s.  At that time, computer use was just beginning to take off.  As a part of the software industry are many different dynamics to include not only the development of the application, but also the maintenance and distribution.  Today, we see the software industry covering a wide array of things that goes into training, consulting, and other types of services.

When you look deep into the overview of the software industry, you will discover that there are actually only two businesses.  One is the creation of proprietary software, which includes some of the huge gurus such as Microsoft, and the second is what is known as open source.  This second option is software developed and then distributed free.  There are some positive and negative aspects of open source in that you pay nothing or little and you usually get a great product.  However, the downside is that some programmers will move on to other projects, which means there is little to no support when problems arise.

Now, in the overview of the software industry, there are different types of software as well.  For instance, you could purchase freeware, which is software that costs nothing, at least initially.  The programmers that develop freeware are eager to help businesses and personal users, hoping this will help make a name for them in the software world.  The goal here is to provide users with something free and then to anticipate that the future will give them some degree of control over the market when they create software for a fee.

The other option we wanted to mention in the overview of the software industry is called shareware.  With this, you would be required to pay for the product.  Now, shareware will often come with a free trial period.  During that time, you would have the option of opting out or if you like the software, purchasing it.  Shareware is actually more of a marketing tool.  For instance, this type of software can be downloaded or installed off a free disc.  Just remember, you will reach a point where you would need to buy the product to continue using it.

Then, our overview of the software industry wants to cover yet a third category called open source.  With this, programmers are eager to promote some type of new software design or function so they will offer the software to anyone who wants it and without licensing requirements.  The goal here is for the user to have the freedom and capability of creating end user generated software with little to no effort.

With so many possibilities and this particular industry constant growing and evolving we now see in the overview of the software industry that this is a multi-billion dollar opportunity.  In 2005, computer software had reached sales of $394 billion and growing.  As mentioned, because computer software is always going to be needed for both personal use and business startup and growth, anyone wanting a good paying and secure career should really consider this option.

In today’s current economical state, we see too many people losing jobs and worrying about what the future holds.  Within the software arena are numerous opportunities to include engineering, programming, publishing, distribution, and more. The bottom line is simple.  A computer is only as good as the software it runs off of.  Without software, a computer is nothing more than a box taking up space.

The overview of the software industry is that we need software to be the brain of the computer, giving it direction and to help it make right decisions.  While the obvious is that computer software is something necessary, it really goes so far beyond that in being a foundation on which businesses and dreams are built.  A good engineer or programmer will look at and analyze the needs of users so perfect software solutions can be designed.  Without doubt, software will never become obsolete.
