The term, “business software”, is one that covers virtually any type of software program designed to improve and measure productivity within a company.  Obviously, this could be just about anything from small to large, and for any industry or size of business.

For example, it would be common to find smaller or startup businesses focusing more on the office suite or accounting solutions.  However, medium size companies usually have different needs such as business software developed for human resources, field service, customer service management, outsourcing, and others.  Then for large corporations, solutions often involve business processes, product lifecycle, enterprise content and planning, etc.

Over the past several years, the options for business software have exploded.  With new technology, the possibilities are truly limitless.  More and more, companies have needs to track, monitor, and analyze all aspects of business, which is what gives them the edge over the competition.  The bottom line is that the more a company can know and understand a customer the more likely they are to have a long lasting relationship.  The following are some of the most valuable types of business software:
  • Online Analytical Processing – With this type of business software, a company is given a great opportunity of seeing better management, support for decisions made, and even information on the executive level.  Typically, this software tool is designed to take huge amounts of information from a number of sources and provide the means for interactive view and analysis.
  • Digital Dashboards – Called several other names, this business software program is intended to take business data and give business owners and staff a quick understanding of conditions, specifically what are known as Key Performance Indicators.
  • Data Mining – This business software tool has been around for years and continues to be a strong solution.  With this particular tool, large amounts of information from a company database can be segregated so unknown trends can be identified.  In other words, with this business software solution, companies have an advanced solution for analyzing important data.
  • Reporting – Business software of this nature works by generating views of information so that management within a company can easily and effectively gain a better understanding of the current position of the business.
  • Business Performance Management – In this case, the business software works by collecting information from a number of different sources and then being able to perform a query so an analysis can be done.  With the results, changes or actions can be devised and implemented.  Often, this type of software provides real time information, which is highly valuable throughout a company, especially for those working in the field or satellite offices.
  • Statistical – Finally, a key option for business software is on the statistical end, having a means by which data can be analyzed for all aspects of the company.
Whether working with Microsoft or some other business software developer, the goal of any program developed is to boost profit for the company by increasing the time it takes to complete a cycle for sales of product and/or service, while cutting costs.  Today, the solutions available are tremendous and when used properly, can be a cutting-edge tool for any organization.

Some types of business software can be purchased shrink-wrapped and off the shelf while other programs have to be customized and created specifically for a company or industry.  For example, one of the most popular types of business software is Microsoft’s Office Suite.  Designed with programs such as Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and others, this is a one-stop shop that is extremely beneficial.

However, companies that specialize in a particular product, service, or process often need to have business software created to meet special needs.  In this case, a good programmer would be hired, someone who could look at the business function and goals to determine the type of program that needs to be developed.  Typically, this solution would be more expensive but the result would be having a viable solution that helps improve the company’s overall status.

For smaller or startup companies, it is usually not cost effective to have a business software program developed but again, with so many exceptional solutions available, most do not need the more advanced option.  Then for people who have a business software program written especially for them, in addition to high cost, there is also the good possibility that the company and supplier would have a long-time contract.

In summary, a company needs to work with the right types of business software to continue growing but the specific solution depends on numerous factors.  Therefore, a business owner needs to start by evaluating the needs for the company and then doing research to determine the right solution that will enhance the company’s goals.
